(November 2002)

It's turning black now
fall taking over
small animals that are thinking they're alone
cross my path
I didn't think I'd be scared
but now it's dark

But I love it out here,
don't wanna go in--
always want to be outside
It doesn't matter - sometimes,
senses before danger -

Do something dumb, do it if
you like - then you gotta
be ready for the dark

Why does it swallow us-
when it comes, so beautiful-
outlines, distinct lines . . .
it's okay to be the student
of beauty, culture, it's okay to be
the muse, it's okay to be the student-
it's okay to quiet yourself
avail yourself of everything

Listen to your elders
they might teach you something worthwhile
try to keep yourself safe,
while you're out smelling everything
while you're out touching everything
while you're out there exploring
just try to keep yourself safe,
and come back to me
